River Shannon Weir Booms

In November 2009 Norfolk Marine Ltd won the contract to design and supply 3 waterways booms to be installed upstream of weirs along the River Shannon in Ireland by submitting the Worthington Products Boat Buster product at tender stage.

Worthington Products are the recognised world leaders in the design, manufacture and supply of waterway barriers for debris control, dam safety, ice booms, fish guidance control and anti-terrorist security, following the successful installation of a debris boom for the fish pass at the ESB’s Erne Generating Station, Ballyshannon in 2008 Norfolk Marine Ltd became the official distributor for Worthington Products in the UK and Ireland.

Upon contract award a joint team from Norfolk Marine and Worthington Products visited the three sites to allow both the booms and their anchorages to be designed, with the subsequent calculations being carried out by Worthington’s Engineer. These were submitted to the client to allow the booms anchor piles to be installed by Waterways Irelands own work force.

In February 2010 the booms were delivered as containerised sea freight from the USA and unloaded by Norfolk Marine Ltd at Waterways Irelands facilities along with the boom to pile anchorages that were fabricated locally in Ireland.

The booms were installed through the spring by Waterways Ireland’s workforce with supervision by Norfolk Marine Ltd.
